Dr Green and our staff of skin care specialists offer an array of services and products for the treatment of Acne-prone skin, in both adolescents and adults. Treatments are individualized depending upon the type of Acne and its severity.
TYPES OF ACNE
Acne is generally classified into two categories: non-inflamed or inflamed.
Non-inflamed Acne refers to the presence of open comedones (i.e., whiteheads) and closed comedones (i.e., blackheads). This type of Acne is managed with exfoliant products that stimulate skin renewal by the removal of non-vital epidermal skin cells and debris that can clog pores. In addition, procedures that promote exfoliation (see below) may accelerate and enhance the benefits of these products.
Inflamed Acne refers to the presence of red bumps, pustules, nodules, and cysts, some of which may be quite tender. This type of Acne is managed with anti-inflammatory medication, most commonly antibiotics. These are administered either topically or orally, depending upon the severity of the inflamed Acne. For severe cystic Acne, the oral equivalent of RetinA
®, known as Accutane
® may be required. Most people with inflamed Acne also have non-inflamed Acne (blackheads and whiteheads). Therefore, exfoliant products and procedures are often very helpful in those with inflamed Acne as well. Treatment of inflamed Acne is important because this commonly results in small depressed scars that can last a lifetime.
PRODUCTS FOR ACNE PRONE SKIN
Exfoliating cleansers, creams, lotions, and gels are used to stimulate skin renewal by the removal of non-vital epidermal cells and debris that can clog pores. It is important that a skin care program is personalized for you to maximize the benefits of these products while avoiding irritation. Your personalized skin care program might vary during the year as seasonal variations in climate can affect your tolerance to all products. For example, your skin may be significantly more sensitive during the winter months and your skin care program would be adjusted accordingly.

PHOTOTHERAPY WITH INTENSE PULSED LIGHT
Intense pulsed light with the LuxV is an effective, innovative, non-invasive modality to treat Acne. The LuxV uses a specific range of wavelengths of light that preferentially targets the Acne-promoting bacteria, i.e., Corynebacterium Acnes, in the follicle by reducing the hyperactive sebaceous glands' production of sebum. LuxV intense pulsed light is used in conjunction with your medical skincare regimen, which may include topical and oral medicine. However, for some, it may be effective enough to control Acne without the need for any oral medication or topical products.
A series of LuxV Acne treatments are usually spaced at intervals of 2-3 weeks. The procedure, simply, involves shining a beam of light onto the acne-prone skin. Each session takes 30-45 minutes and all usual activities may be resumed immediately. During treatment you feel a mild stinging sensation. Immediately after, your skin will be pink and there may be mild swelling lasting up to 24 hours. Blemishes may, initially, appear more pink but this is temporary as the treatment promotes their improvement.
LuxV pulsed light treatments not only reduce the current break-out but attempts to diminish future pimples from appearing.

Glycolic (AHA) Acid Peel
Glycolic acid (AHA) peeling is an exfoliating treatment formulated to gently but effectively remove non-vital epidermal cells and debris from the skin's surface. It is the accumulation of this matter that can clog pores resulting in blackheads, whiteheads as well as inflamed Acne. Treatments are provided at regular intervals - initially every 2 weeks - in conjunction with a home skin care maintenance program. Once the skin has improved considerably, maintenance treatments are recommended monthly.

Salicylic (BHA) Acid Peel
Salicylic Acid is a Beta-Hydroxy acid which works similarly to Alpha-Hydroxy Acids to exfoliate dead skin cells, however, it contains a larger molecular size.
